The formative book of my childhood. I still read this book once I year. I've read it some 36 times. Wonderful, wonderful stuff from an age when getting lost on an island--not a magic island--was still possible. There's a delicious optimism about humanity in this book. The parents construct a mini-Europe in the jungle, the sons learn the value of knowledge and ingenuity mixed.

This book stands in stark contrast to "Lord of the Flies" (another fine book), though I think both are very much products of their time.
