Now I'm a fan of Jennifer Egan. This novel tells the creepy story of a loser-ish aging goth reuniting with his cousin to rehab an old haunted castle in an unnamed East European country. Danny's story intersects with that of a convict taking a writing class in prison and that of his writing teacher. There are a lot of threads in this story, which never stops moving in all directions until the threads come together in the end. There are also multiple themes, and it's hard to tease them out and decide what is the main idea. Some themes are: haunting and guilt, imprisonment and freedom, communication, and authorship and identity
