Rene Magritte painting: “This is not a pipe”
It’s actually a painting of a pipe.

Alternate Reality Gaming (ARG) term, TINAG: “This Is Not A Game”
It’s really a game, but to play you act like it isn’t.

Walter John Williams book “This is Not a Game”
It’s a good book, but it isn’t science fiction.

It’s in the sf sections of the bookstore and library, it’s written by an sf writer, and it takes place in the near future, but it’s really a murder mystery appended to a techno-thriller. Our heroine must escape mortal danger when rioters take to the streets. The software company she works for isn’t any safer. Fortunately, Dagmar gets help from the online gamers of the ARG she is directing. Of course, they aren’t quite sure if her problems are part of the game or not, after all, TINAG.

This book is a fast and easy read and quite enjoyable. Dagmar is a great character and many members of my book group wanted to see her in a sequel. Even the lesser characters are interesting and well defined. Their online and real life exchanges are realistic and, at least for a few more years, accurate.

The author and my book group members led me to investigate many topics and ideas late into several nights - online, of course.
