The last book in the series the Mysterious Benedict Society’s in filled with character development. In the pervious volume, three of the four characters find out their family yet Constance remains family-less. Her adoption papers are lost and her existence is shrouded in mystery. Her gifts are elaborated in this book. She can not only read people’s mind but also change them by imposing her thoughts on them. Mr. Curtain had invented an instrument called the Whisperer’. This instrument was capable of easing one’s memory. Thus allowing the ‘instrument’s controller’ to have access to your most private thoughts. Together, the three children defeat the evil Mr. Curtain and his bodyguards (the Ten Men). More than just a light childish adventure, The Mysterious Benedict Society is about finding a place of belonging. One must not forget the perennial theme or good versus evil. In this context ‘good’ is played by four talented youngsters. I leave you with a riddle that reflects the author’s genius.

The answer to this riddle has a hole in the middle,
And some have been known to fall in it,
In tennis it’s nothing but it can be received,
And sometimes a person can win it.
Though not seen or heard it may be perceived,
Like princes or bees in a clover,
The answer to this riddle has a hole in the middle,
And without it one cannot start over.
