** spoiler alert ** Like Mark Haddon's most excellent, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-time, this book has broad age appeal. It's science fiction because it has aliens and space travel, but it's mostly a story of two precocious friends who stumble upon a secret: several of their teachers appear to be aliens. Charlie and Jim discover their teacher's alien status when they bug the teacher's lounge to find out whether Jim will be expelled; a rumor that Jim's obnoxious older sister Becky shares with him. Charlie continues to investigate the teachers and ultimately learns too much. He gets abducted and Jim and Becky take off to find him. This is a very British book with many a common British word that American kids won't necessarily know, but that is not a deterrent. The chase is exciting and the book is filled with humorous bits that enhance the story.
