This is the fourth book in the Gaslight Mysteries and I really enjoyed them. The history of New York City during this time period is worth the read but now you have a midwife, Sarah Brandt, and a policeman, Frank Malloy, as the icing on the proverbial cake.

Stephanie I like the historical background in this series too, in a time when Teddy Roosevelt was Chief of Police, trying to stop corruption, when the poor lived in these awful tenements, while the very rich lived not too far away with their butlers, servants and dark secrets. ( Some things never change.) I read "Murder on Astor Place" and "Murder in Gramercy Park", and liked the former much better. I think it's the first in the series.
