Opening Line: "Dr.Zoe Lange gazed out the window of the limo as the driver pulled up at the Pentagon."

What a great addition to the Tall Dark & Dangerous series this turned out to be. I would have to say that THE ADMIRAL'S BRIDE is one of the better (best?) from the series so far and the reason why all stems from its absolutely sigh-worthy hero (and some damn sexy shower scenes) With this 7th addition we get 53 year old Admiral Jake Robinson’s story and who knew I’d end up having a thing for older men when I was done? But Jake is just a great hero regardless of his age; accomplished, kind, selfless, more than capable, oh so sexy and kinda awesome.

After first meeting Jake in (Hawken's Heart) I was a little sceptical about his romantic lead abilities however I need not have worried because Brockmann does an excellent job here with the older man/younger woman scenario, writing both characters in such multifaceted ways that I had no trouble in believing that they belonged together despite their considerable age difference. Zoe, with her military background is Jake’s perfect match as she understands him in ways even his late wife couldn’t. A little hero worship on her part doesn’t hurt either.

When six canisters of a deadly nerve agent are stolen from a military testing lab our Admiral defies convention and decides to lead his handpicked team of SEAL’s in infiltrating the cult leader’s compound where the deadly toxin is being stored. Posing as a married couple Jake’s partner on this mission is Dr Zoe Lange, a biological warfare specialist and expert in espionage. She is well aware of the Admiral’s reputation although she seems to be the only one on the team that has faith in his aging capabilities. Jake is still sharp however and in as good of shape as men 30 years his junior.

The love scenes in this one are smoking hot in part because of this ‘big brother’ scenario our couple finds themselves in. Once inside the compound their every move is being monitored, forcing them into some fake newlywed intimacy. This really added an element of naughty sensuality to an already volatile situation because despite the roles they’re playing these two want each other. Zoe however often doesn‘t know if the affection the Admiral is showing her is real or for the benefit of those watching on the strategically placed cameras? When the shower becomes the one place that they can truly be alone um… Wow!

Of course then we still have the added element of Jake grieving for his wife, the guilt over that and again the age difference. Oh and lets not forget about those canisters of deadly nerve agent, the crazy cult members and the team of wisecracking SEAL‘s watching everything back at base. Yeah this was super good.

Buggy Its SO good. I've now got a serious thing for older man- and strangely showers too (you'll see)

Jane (PS) I've been thinking about reading this series, but I hadn't like Unsung Hero much (disliked the heroine), so haven't taken the plunge... What do you think Buggy?

Buggy I haven't read the Troubleshooters series yet Jane but I have given almost all the books in this series 5 stars. I would definitely recommend it, great romantic suspense (heavy on the romance)

Try book #1 Prince Joe and see how you go. They're short, easy reads, all stand alones but with continuing story arcs and updates from past characters as you go along.
There was only 1 book where I hated the heronine, the others I enjoyed.

I've already read all of both series. I actually like TDD better than TS. Just revisiting TDD as the audios are released.

Buggy Interesting Nicki, everyone raves about the Troublehooters but you hear very little about this series and I think its fantastic.

Sorry for the delay, wish our notifications would come back!

I like the Troubleshooters but SB has gotten more in depth and moved into social commentary, IMO. I tend to like a more lean romantic suspense stories for the most part. Reading is more about escapism for me. If I wanted social commentary I wouldn't be reading romance. ;)

Don't get me wrong. I want good characters and good stories but mainly I want ROMANCE!

All that being said, Izzy's story is in my TBR mountain.

Don't know if I've put that very well but...

Buggy I'm going to have to come over and check out your bookshelves because that's exactly what I want in my romantic suspense. Good exciting stories but heavy on the romance.

I'd heard that Brockmann was going a bit overboard preaching her views, too bad.

What other Rom suspense series did you enjoy besides TD&D??

My favorite reads in the world are historical romantic suspense which is rarely done well. Some of my favorites there include anything by Amanda Quick, Jo Bevelery's Rogues and Mallorens. SOME Stephanie Laurens (Devil's Bride is an all time favorite but the Cynsters quickly taper off). Celeste Bradley's Liars Club and Royal 4 series are good. My newest discovery is Zoe Archer's Blades of the Rose. Warrior and Scoundrel are 2 of the best I've read in a long time. Anne Gracie's books are great and have suspense elements. The Perfect Rake is a GREAT book.

For contemporary romantic suspense my favorite are Elizabeth Lowell's Donovans and Rarites, mainly 'cause I LOVE her heros (Owen Walker, Yum). She writes them the way I like them. I like most Linda Howard, like JoAnn Ross a lot, some Cindy Gerard (first black Ops book is outstanding).

Check out my books. There are lots more. I read a wide variety of stuff but the perfect mix of romance and suspense is hard to find.

Buggy Thanks so much for all the great recs. I've been very intrequed by the Blades of the Rose series, I'll have to check it out.
I alos like JoAnne Ross I really enjoyed Shattered And I love Cindy Gerad's Black Ops. Show No Mercy was excellant.

Good Morning! Shattered is a favorite JR. She released the first 2 in the series in audio. I wish she (or the pub.) would release Shattered. The audios are very good for Blaze and No Safe Place.

I spend a lot of time in the car taking kids to swim meets and just going to the nearest big town for shopping so audios are invaluable!

H2 Agree with the Cindy Gerard rec above. I love the SB series, both of them. Admirals Bride and Blue's stories were my favorite in the Tall, Dark and Dangerous series. I really liked the troubleshooter's series as well, but think the earlier books were the best.

message 15: by Jane (PS) (new)

Jane (PS) OK - thanks for the input on this series. I'll definitely bypass the Troubleshooters and go for Prince Joe. I'm like all of you - I like more romance in good plot, than bothering with a heap of social commentary... :) Reading IS for escapism!

Buggy I'm saving the Troubleshooters for last.

Thanks Nicki I'm going to look into more from Joanne Ross

Auntee Excellent review Buggy! Now I want to read this one again--I remember the shower scene(s).:)

I do like JR. I've read a good bit of her back list. Most are pretty good (Callahan Brothers and Stewart Sisters stand out). Some are a little out there (the Sci Fi ones)

I especially like the High risk series ( Freefall (High Risk, #1) Crossfire (High Risk, #2) Shattered (High Risk, #3) Breakpoint (High Risk, #4)). She retells the battle where Shane was injured from each man's perspective in their own book. How it affected them then and once they got home: trauma, PST, and all. All four rate very high with me. A unique series.

Thanks Auntee, how could anyone forget the shower scene?!

I loved Shattered, I'll have to go back and read the rest of the series. I didn't know she took that one battle and showed it for each character, very clever. apparently its based on a real event
