Love, Unexpectedly (Wild Ride To Love #2)
by Susan Fox (Goodreads Author)

2 ½ stars. I needed a better plot and a more interesting heroine. The beta hero Nav was good.
REVIEWER’S OPINION:
The purpose of the book may be more about erotic sex scenes than story, but somehow the story detracted from the sex. I can’t recommend it. There is a lot of conversation that is dull. Kat does not interest me. I was annoyed with her refusal to be logical about Nav. She had sex with him several times, but she kept playing this odd game in her mind about needing him as a friend and sex would destroy the friendship. This was the main conflict through most of the book. I was also annoyed when Nav said some serious things to Kat, yet she twisted them in her mind to mean something entirely different. These inaccurate assumptions (one of my pet peeves) caused “a misunderstanding” separation.
STORY BRIEF:
Kat would love to be married, but she keeps falling for the wrong type of guy – flashy/celebrity. Nav is from East India and is working as a photographer. He met Kat two years ago when he moved into the building. He has loved her ever since, but she sees him only as a best friend. Kat’s sister is getting married. To avoid family pressures Kat asks Nav to pretend to be her boyfriend/date for the wedding. He agrees. Kat loves trains so she takes the multiple-day train ride from Montreal to Vancouver. She expects Nav to fly to the wedding later. Nav shaves, changes his hair and clothes, and shows up on the train pretending to be Pritam. Kat soon realizes Pritam is really Nav. As long as Kat can pretend Pritam is not Nav, she is able to have an affair with him. Nav also has a second disguise he uses. His goal is to get Kat to be open to a relationship that is more than “just friends.”
CAUTION (POSSIBLY BUT NOT REALLY A SPOILER):
One thing didn’t make sense to me. Nav’s parents paid for his schooling including an MBA. Soon after that he became a photographer. He had a trust fund, but he never touched it because he wanted to prove he was independent and make it on his own (page 291). Yet he told someone “I’ve paid my parents back for the money they spent on my education” (page 281). I don’t understand how and when he earned that much money to pay his parents back. He is just now going to have his first photography showing.
DATA:
Story length: 294 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 10. Approximate number of sex scene pages: 38. Setting: current day Canada. Copyright: 2010. Genre: erotic contemporary romance.

Uh oh. Carrie and I both added this to our TBR's after seeing it on AAR, where it got a good review. I'll probably read it next week.

Well, good. We can compare notes. I've never gone to AAR. I get lists of books to buy from RT Book Reviews Magazine. I assume AAR is All About Romance. How does it work? Do you use it more than other sources?
I don't use AAR much. I get the majority of my suggestions from other people (here and other boards). But I check AAR (yes, it's All About Romance) every morning usually. They put two new reviews up every day. I don't always go by their reviews, but I pay attention when something gets a high mark. I think this book was designated "Desert Isle Keeper." But that's one person's opinion. I've never read RT. Do you subscribe, or can it be read online?
I'll try AAR. Thanks.Romantic Times Book Reviews Magazine costs $59.90 for 2 years. It comes monthly to my home. They have about 250 book reviews each month. Most of their reviewers give more stars than I would give, but it gives me a place to start to decide whether to buy a book. What is also nice, is that suscribers can use the online database to search by an author and see all the past RT Reviews and ratings ever given for all the books by that author. However, I find Goodreads ratings and reviews more useful than rt's database.
I don't think the nicely organized monthly lists of 250 reviews is available online. I like the hard copy magazine I receive. It's easy to go thru the lists of 250 and mark them up. I think some of the articles are online, but I don't read most of those. You can give the online a try and see if it is helpful. I do love my hard copy magazines though.
The web site is www.rtbookreviews.com
Another thought: I was at the RT Annual convention a year ago and asked the magazine editors how they decided what books to include in the monthly 250. They said RT will review every new book sent to them and put in it the magazine. The biggest problem for RT is that sometimes the publishers, agents or others don't get around to sending all new books to RT. So, the RT editors encourage "authors" to send their new books to RT just in case the publisher doesn't get around to it. In other words, RT puts in every new book they know about. There are also a lot of ads for new books.
Wow. I knew they did reviews, however I had no idea the extent. I'll have to check out the site and maybe look into to the magazine. I wonder if the library would have any back copies for me to check out. Hmm. Thanks for hte info.
If your library does not have them, try Borders or Barnes & Noble. Different stores in Chicago carry different magazines, so you'd have to ask around. Before I subscribed I bought it one specific Borders store. It comes out between the 20th and 27th of the month.I have a couple duplicate copies (over a year old). If you'd like I could send one to you. You'd probably want to send me your address in a "private" email to janestewart@rcn.com.
