The problem with many epics is that the conclusion generally requires a lot of grandeur to justify the road up to it and, in the process, the author loses sight of the characters that the reader fell in love with in the first place. I was really jarred by the lost year of time that separates book 4 from 5 and it took some time to get over it, but I think Riordan did a great job of staging the requisite epic battles without losing intimate focus on the characters we know and love and, though the ending of it all was never really in doubt for me, he did an equally great job of keeping the narrative tension high and the stakes still important. A thoroughly satisfying series.
