Billy Budd, Sailor
by Herman Melville
by Herman Melville
Required reading for classes rarely occurs in a timely manner for me. I read the Sparknotes for class (no point in beating around the bush), but wanted to at least give it a chance. While it was certainly not a thriller, Melville did stick with me for a few days debating the ending. I have remained decidedly indifferent however, mostly due to my inability to follow the random digressions on mutinies throughout the book. I understand they serve a background person, but they were too drawn out for my liking. On the upside, Billy Budd could be a great name for a boat someday. It could serve as a reminder to all who board that the captain will maintain control at all costs...
