Lovely oil-paint illustrations capture the time period in this story of Roxey, a train-hopping former stray who charms everyone, including President Theodore Roosevelt.

Roxey could be an addition to discussions about transportation history, famous animals, and adopted dogs.

Roxey's fans may be annoyed that the illustrations don't look much like the original mixed-breed. (Although the original Roxey was a dog of mostly indeterminable lineage, the artist depicts him as more identifiably pit bull terrier.)

One downside: the word “master” is once used to describe Roxey’s keeper.
