Lost Souls (Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, #4)
by Dean Koontz
by Dean Koontz
Koontz re-boots his Frankenstein theme with a second incarnation of Victor Frankenstein. This one, a clone, does not evnision re-making mankind into a perfect society. Instead, he (it?) wants to obliterate everything on earth. I'm not sure if a book can "Jump the shark" but if it can, Koontz has done it here. Things start to go completely paranormal as the new Victor, in less than several years, has found a way to create beings made up of nano-machines which can devour humans and replicate themeselves in mere hours. No more is there the conflict between the human condition and the delusional ego-maniacal scientest. Instead we get humanity fighting against some superweapon developed by a clone Frankenstein that has no character depth at all. It was a very quick read and I probably would have given it fewer stars except that I'm invested in the "good guys", Carson, Michael, and Deucalion and it was nice to see some more of their stories. I hope Koontz decides to put a little more effort into the next Frankenstein work and perhaps bring it back to earth a little and develop the story behind this new antagonist.
