This is pure silliness, and so? The world needs more silliness. The plots that are skewered are hakneyed and richly in need of parody, and there are a few very ingenious conceits.

This book occasioned my first realization of what a major difference the Panama canal made. I'd assumed that all the '49ers went overland, but, come to think of it, of COURSE they didn't all. Many went 'around the horn'--or by other seaborne routes.
