Read in June, 2010

I had this book for a long while, I think I got it when it was first released. For some reason I kept putting it off, so finally I decided to read it.

I have to say that this book was nothing like I expected it to be. I mean I knew what it was about, but it is different from what I thought it would be. I read some of Kim Harrison’s adult book series and I believe that even though I did not read Madison Avery series yet, I sort of thought that it would be very much similar to adult ones. At least in writing style, but it was not. Do not get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with this series, it was good and I have already purchased the second book in the series since it was just released.

The story is about seventeen year old Madison, who is dead and a ghost. Actually not really a ghost since she has a body, but you will have to read a book to see how that happens. Basically, story is about light and dark reapers and time keepers. At first Madison is clueless about what and who she is, or I should say, what she can become. But as the story progressed mysteries are unravelled and new discoveries are made.

I really liked Madison’s character, she is smart, spunky, sarcastic, not a conformist, kind. I like the fact that she does not try to be popular, she just trying to be herself. Lets face it high school is not easy, there is a lot of peer pressure, among other things. Madison does not sit idly by and let others decide her fate, she takes matters in her own hands.

Josh and Barnabas are very interesting characters, they are both well written and hope to see more of both. Josh is nice guy and does not care what other people (his friends?) think of his friendship with Madison. While Barnabas is mysterious and do not know his intentions are. Are they good or tare hey bad?

The story line progressed nicely throughout the book, there is a lot of plot developments, also a lot of set up for the upcoming book(s). However, I do think that the end was somewhat anti-climatic. The action scene toward the end could have been much better, more action, it was just to easy. But do not let this get you discouraged, this book is still worth reading. I was surprised that the supernatural elements of this books are not overwhelming even though it plays a major part in the plot.

Overall, this books was good, interesting, mystery filled, sprinkle of romance, fast paced, well written and well developed characters. But it you love Kim Harrison’s adult books and you think that this series is similar or along the same line than no this is not the book for you. This is much lighter side of Kim Harrison’s writing, which is intended for different audience.

I give this books 4 STARS out of 5 STARS
