I've been putting off reading this for various reasons, but once I picked it up it was hard to put down. It's an intimate & detailed portrait of the lives of three women, two black, one white, in 1960s Missisippi, and of the interrelationships of black women who cared for white children. It's about friendships across the visible and invisible lines of race and class, and ultimately it's about how those lines are in our heads, not in the real world. Recommended.
