Leon's Inspector Brunetti novels are as much about the characters and their relationships with each other as they are about the mystery. One of the main "characters" is the city of Venice and her knowledge and love of the city is a major attraction of this series for me. I found this one particularly good, with layers of meaning around the concept of appearance and assumptions that resonated long after I finished the novel.
