Read from October 23 to 25, 2010

Ok, let’s start with some general stuff first. In my opinion, Nightshade was a nice and steady read. I thought the world-building was unique and the heroine easily likeable. She’s pretty, though and a little bit of a tomboy, so nothing new there, but nevertheless, I found myself liking her instantly. There are actually quite a few interesting characters in this book. Some were likeable and some just made my skin crawl. Efron and Logan? Ugh. *shudders*

As for the romance...be warned! This book is one big fat love triangle and the story is almost solely focused on it. There are two boys fighting for Calla’s affection.
Ren, a werewolf like Calla, whom she’s promised to and Shay, a human boy who’s new to town and whose live Calla had saved once. (which was a major violation of the rules, of course).
I liked how it all started out with Calla and Shay and the author definitely wanted us to whoop for him in this love triangle but in the end, Ren was the one who got my pulse racing. I’m into strong male characters and don’t mind the occasional jerkness and believe me, Ren can be a jerk alright. He’s basically your typical bad boy. If you had issues with, say, Ethan from Glimmerglass you probably won’t like Ren, though. *nudges Olivia* I thought Calla’s and Ren’s chemistry was great and tangible and I really liked the forbidden romance vibe. I guess we were supposed to get this vibe off her fling with Shay, too, but somehow that was lost on me.

I didn’t get Calla’s attraction to Shay at all, to be honest. I found him rather dull and that whole oh-my-god-I-knew-you-were-my-soul-mate-from-the-first-time-I-laid-eyes-on-you-and-that’s-why-I-want-to-make-out-with-you-right-away thing rarely works for me anyway. I need some suspense, I want to hope and fear and wonder along with the heroine whether her beloved one returns her affection or not. So if the author had made Shay a little less boring and had given Calla and him more time to fall for each other and build up some tension, I probably would have liked him better.

What irked me was the fact that there isn’t that much happening in the first half of the book. It’s all about the romance and the ways of the packs. How the wolves operate is interesting, don’t get me wrong, and I really liked the dynamics within the pack but I want to establish that this book focuses mainly on the romance part. If you don’t mind that, you’ll be fine. Towards the end, the pace picked up a little but the turn of events didn’t really come as a surprise. It was rather obvious, unfortunately.

In my opinion, Nightshade is one of the less innocent YA novels seeing as some pretty though topics were addressed and the make-out scenes weren’t all too innocent either.

All in all, I enjoyed this book and I’m pretty sure that I will pick up the sequel. I’m just hoping for a little less love triangle and a little more plot in Wolfsbane.

I can see why a lot of people loved this book and from what I can tell so far, I think some of the bookers might like it, too. Tina, Nic, this goes out to you especially. Olivia, you most definitely were right to kick it off your wish list ;-)

Oh and, little cover slut that I am, I have to give a few bonus points for the awesome cover and deckled edges :-)

So...3 stars it is!

Nic I can't wait to see this book. Still waiting on my copy. Happy reading :)

Jessica Thanks Nic :-D I've got pretty high expectations so I'm really curious.

Shera (Book Whispers) Yeah, the ending "prey" had huge neon flashing lights all over it. Still really awesome though!! >_<

Jessica Yeah, and I think I just saw a parade. They had flags, too ;-)

Jessica Hehe, thanks Kim :-) I loved your review, though. So funny and you were right with everything you said, too!

You're welcome, Olivia :)

Arlene Great review Jessica. I'm thinking I might like this one. :)

Shera (Book Whispers) Great review. The love traingle was a bit over powering. I didn't feel anything for either of the love interest. (I was not an Ethan fan.)

~Tina~ Great review! And I think you may be right. These are my kind of books so I'm hoping for the best:)

Jessica Thanks Arlene. I really hope that you're going to like it! Looking forward to hear your thoughts :-)

Shera, thanks. Yep, the love triangle was a bit too much, which was a shame really because I thought the plot was quite promising. I'll cross my fingers for the sequel!

Jessica Thank you Tina. Let me know what you think when you start reading it. :-)

Yes! There is soooo much promise from this series I can't wait tell the sequel.

Janina Really liked your review, Jessica. I think I probably wouldn't enjoy this too much, though. I think I'll kick it off as well ...

Jessica Thank you, Janina. Yeah, I don't think that this book's for you, either.

Nic Great review Jessica. I tend to be a bit more book forgiving when it comes to paranormal romance so here is hoping I will enjoy it.

As long as there isn't any mean girls fighting over a boy in it I should be right I am so over that. Is there?

Morgan F Efron? As in Zach Efron?

Jessica Thank you, Nic! Yeah, this book really wasn't all that bad. If you can overlook some flaws it's really an enjoyable read. I'm quite positive that you're going to like it, too.
Nah, not really. There is one mean girl but there isn't really any fighting about the boys.
I think I'm going to read Firelight next...or Amy's and Roger's Epic Detour. Hmm...I can't deceide :-/

Jessica ROFL Morgan. No, this Efron wasn't singing and dancing like a Cheerleader...

Morgan F AMY AND ROGERS!

AMY AND ROGERS!

Nic AMY & ROGERS EPIC DETOUR

~Tina~ Read the Epic Detour! It's awesomesauce!!

Arlene Oh Jessica, if you haven't heard yet... read Amy & Rogers. It's awesome! :)

message 25: by oliviasbooks (new)

oliviasbooks I liked both.

Jessica Alright, the Epic Detour it is... :-)

~Tina~ WoooooooT!

Morgan F Win!

Milly Thanks for the nice review! Still in my TBR pile!

Tanya Bowen I'm glad I'm not the only one that had a thing for Ren...haha:]

Georgie I'm amazed that some people like Shay. I absolutely agree with your take on Shay and Calla's relationship. I don't get it. Team Ren.

Courtg totally agree about ren :) love him.... btw I read amy and rogers epic detour and I thought it was extra boring....

~Tina~ Courtg wrote: "totally agree about ren :) love him.... btw I read amy and rogers epic detour and I thought it was extra boring...."

Boring? Aww sorry you felt that way, I thought that book was awesome:)

Courtg I mean it wasn't a bad book but it didn't really capture my attention :(

Morgan F Did you finish it?

Courtg ya but it took me a lot longer than usual

Jessica That's a pity. I loved Amy's & Roger's Epic Detour! Sorry you couldn't get into it!

Katie I totally agree with your review. I really didn't like Shay or get why Calla liked him either. I didn't really read anything about him that made want to like him. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I think you are right on with the review!

Jessica Thank you Katie! :)

Daphne Delacroix Yeah you're right, I was Team Ren ALL THE WAY!HE's perfect! And I'm into bad boys!

herhairsonfire I was so annoyed with Shay in this book. He was so persistent, even when he was told to back off...more than once.

Parisxxx true

Jennifer I totally agree with your review. Also, I just bought Wolfsbane today, and the cover is soooo unattractive next to Nightshade!!!
