bookshelves: poetry

I'm stepping out alone on this review, it seems. This venue is littered with four and five star reviews for Ariel.

Other than a few poems that truly do shine, I'm going to have to say that I think Sylvia Plath was not a consistently good poet.

Poetry gains deeper meaning when we learn more about a poet. When we (think) we understand the place they were in (physically or mentally), we begin to see the symbols and imagery they laid out as something we connect to and this elevates the work in our eyes.

It was not pleasant to read this angry, dirty, desperate poetry. I am definitely no fan of Sylvia Plath.

Interesting, if you are a fan, to listen to her read her own Lady Lazarus.

Rachel That's because you aren't in this place and that's a good thing. :)

Cami It's true. But when it comes right down to it, I'm not sure that she's truly a very good poet.

Terresa Plath is one of those brilliant crazy people, a genius. I put her in that realm because there she reigns, in layered black depths, as through her words, death crawls down your throat.

Her imagery is wicked, fresh, and her diction blows me away.

I am not enamored of her, I am aghast, awed sick, stunned.
