Raina is in 6th grade when she falls and breaks her two front teeth. For the next several years she struggles with braces, retainers and headgear as well as trying to fit in with her rapidly maturing friends. It isn't until high school that she's able to accept herself.
I like Telgemeier's cute, detailed and colorful drawings. The San Francisco cityscapes are especially eye-catching. She also includes many visual details (acid-washed jeans, Teen Spirit, Exclamation) that help to establish the time and setting.
