I thought the research the author did on apothecaries, doctors, and the state of medicine in the early 1800s was interesting and integrated well with the story. I also liked that the plot kept unfolding and that the author sought for realism in the lives of her characters. There were things that didn't ring true and felt contrived - meant more to appeal to the audience than to be historically accurate - but I'd best save those comments for the book club discussion!
