I think this book suffered from 'have to get from point a to point b' plotting, rather than a natural flow. I liked book 1 better, it was a bit more coherent. Although points to the author for 1) the title, saltation, seems to refer to jumps (of sediment or evolution) and 2) acknowledging the changes in status with section breaks. Also, the main character is such a stand-off type, even among her peers, that it was hard to like her.

Note that this is sort of a reread, since I read the online first draft.
