Man, I loved these. They're very funny... problem is they're really only good the first time around, and only when you read them just when they've come out... and uh... probably also only if you're fourteen and without a boyfriend.. The jokes date themselves very quickly (like the constant references to "Blue Crush" in a later book... though it's considered a classic 'round the Johnston house). They also don't actually make sense in terms of time continuity. (Almost all of) the books were released one year apart from each other, yet the each novel picks up exactly where the last left off... so she really couldn't be referencing, for example, Blue Crush and Twilight, in the same calendar year. THINK ABOUT IT, MEG.
So anyway, three stars, because it was really enjoyable to read at the time, but I'd probably want to kill Mia now (as I did in later books). Cabot is repetitive to the point of nausea, and not just within each novel. All of her novels use the same exact voice. Bo
