** spoiler alert ** This is a pirate story where the ships are airships, the oceans are mountains and the harbours are cities in the mountains. The setting is a mix between steampunk and pirate-time Caribbean. There is also a kind of magic involving the summoning of demons. The universe is very interesting and it seems like the author have much more in store than just this book. Even though, the book is an entire story, it very much feels like the beginning of a series. The crew of a semi-pirate airship is introduced. They all have their dark secrets and they are all revealed in the book explaining why they are on the ship. In particular, the captain Frey has been stupid beyond bounds in his earlier life – sleeping with apparently all the women introduced in the book. This is the major part of the book that I do not like. I simply have very little sympathy with Frey – he is an idiot. Of course the theme of the book is how he evolves from a turd to a noble pirate that saves the world.
The language in the book is not as elegant as I would have liked (Melville for example) and the idea of the crew having a good time drinking and horing is (of some reason) not really my taste.
The plot is ok, but plagued by some unbelievable coincidences. The fact that the utter-idiot captain is able to lure the superevils is not credible.
In conclusion, I do not think I will continue reading the series. Unless, the reviews are red hot.
