Lia and her best friend, Cassie, challenge and help each other lose weight. Lia is down to 500 calories a day (if she stays strong), and Cassie binges and purges. Then one day they have a falling out, and 6 months later Cassie is found dead in a hotel room. Lia continues to not eat, and lie to her family, and she is haunted by the 33 calls she got from Cassie (and did not answer) the night she died.

I almost couldn't finish this one, which I think is a compliment to how unrelentingly honest it is about the mental state of this suffering girl. But I'm glad I stuck it out.

Reader Jeannie Stith does a good job aurally interpreting the various textual effects such as strike-throughs and parentheses. Some of her adult voices got on my nerves as sounding somewhat overbearingly "adult."
