Stalin himself may be long gone, but many of the themes of Animal Farm are still instructive in modern times. The most chilling part, to me—far worse than Napoleon's snarling enforcers, was the effectiveness of the pigs' propaganda and the naïve credulity of the other animals. Without free speech and freedom of the press, apparent wealth and liberty don't count for much.
