really liked it
bookshelves: picture-books

This book also has another powerful message about homelessness. It could be used alongside Maniac Magee and Way Home. This lesson might be better for older middle school students because some aspects of the stories will take longer to discuss. For example, Andrew is scared of the airport security. Some students might be able to relate with Andrew’s father leaving him with another family throughout the day. Some students have parents that work full time and are left alone. I really enjoyed the symbolism with the bird. Andrew is surrounded by planes, birds (both can fly), and people (have the ability to come and go as they please/ they also do not have to be inconspicuous) that symbolize freedom he does not have.
