If you’re familiar with comics, then you know that it isn’t possible for the big two comic companies, Marvel and DC, to go a year without some huge event that sprawls across multiple titles. Usually the events are a disappointment–a lot of hype and not enough delivery. Last year, though, DC came through with an event that was well received with the "Sinestro Corps War."

It featured the Green Lantern Corps, led by the most famous lantern, Hal Jordan, fighting against Sinestro, who created the Yellow Lanterns. Green Lanterns are intergalactic police officers. They are chosen for their ability to "overcome great fear," and given a power ring which can create just about anything the user can imagine. The rings are fueled by the user’s willpower. Yellow Lanterns are the antithesis of that and get their power by preying on people’s fears.

Green Lantern: the Sinestro Corps War Volume 1, written by Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons, and drawn by Ivan Reis, Ethan Van Sciver, and Patrick Gleason, features the first part of the Sinestro Corps War storyline. The story jumps right into the action with Superman-Prime being bust out of Green Lantern custody by the Yellow Lanterns. From there the pace doesn’t let up. This is high adrenaline comic book storytelling at its finest. Both the writing and the art are fantastic, and it does what any good serialized story should do, which is leaving you wanting more.

I highly recommend it, but it’s probably not a good starting point for someone unfamiliar with the Green Lantern Corps or with comics in general. The library is getting the entire run of Green Lantern comics since its re-launch beginning with Green Lantern: Rebirth. So, if this sounds interesting, but you aren’t well versed in comic lore, then I’d suggest starting there. --Brian
