really liked it
bookshelves: contemporary
Recommended for: people fascinated with academia, zadie smith fans

A very solid contemporary novel, awkward in parts. I think better editing would have enhanced it. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could!

CK Since this is one of my all-time favorite novels, I'd love to know which parts you thought were awkward (if you can remember, sorry for the late entry into the conversation). Usually I can spot a poorly edited book from a mile away, but I might have let my love for Zadie get in the way this time.

Kristen Whenever the mom "went Southern" it was so awkward! There were just some Americanisms that I thought she missed, and that someone could have helped her out with.

I liked it, and it made me want to read White Teeth, where she is probably more in her element.
