An entertaining read by Dick Francis, however the story relies on his well tried scenario of uninterested/incompetent police. Other times the police are not called in, even when there are witnesses and good evidence. Why not? Because then there would not be a story. I like Dick Francis's books, but this is a regular weakness.
I expected Nanterre to die and was anticipating such for much of the book. I'm pleased the story turned out not to be so predictable. Killing the baddy off at the end is usually a lazy finish. However that death scene was instead reserved for Maynard, returning the predictability and making a lazy end for him. Justice stolen like that weakens the ending and takes away the satisfaction that justice brings.
I'm giving it 3 for the better parts of the story.
