I found myself hoping that this would be an alternate timeline of Jane's life and she would elope with Mr. Sidmouth. However, it was not to be. I also kept pondering during this novel about how the greatest, most passionate loves seem to be forged during the heat of war. This could be an over-exaggeration stemming from the hopeless romantic residing in my head, but I wish we could have pursued Mr. Sidmouth more. Nevertheless, if the author did that, then what point would there be to Harold Trowbridge, whose character I also very much adore (and he only played a very minor role in this book).

Much like the Sharpe series (movies, not books although some of the books are good reads), the Jane Austen Mystery Series seems to improve itself with each successive book. I am very much looking forward to the fourth installment, Jane and the Genius of the Place.
