I've recently become a Laurie Halse Anderson fan and am working my way through her young adult fiction. Twisted was a little harder to like than some of her other YA novels. This time, the protagonist is a male and he is less sympathetic than some of Anderson's troubled female protagonists.

Twisted also has some pretty detailed and graphic descriptions of contemplating suicide. Normally, I'm all for pushing the boundaries in YA. I think that teens need access to literature that adults might find distressing. I listened to both Twisted and Speak on audiobook but had a much harder time with Twisted. I was glad that the discs I listened to had 3-minute tracking. I ended up skipping through some of the more distressing scenes. Maybe I would have been less upset if I had read the book in print.
