** spoiler alert ** A memoir inspired by his mother’s letters to his uncle that he inherited much later in life after she died on his sixth birthday,it is a requiem both for his mother and a passing way of life.As usual,Doig writes poetic prose evoking, almost against our will, nostalgia for the hard-scrabble life in the desert of Arizona or the high country of Montana—depicting an undeniable American archetype of the West from the “lariat proletariat.”
