Touching the Clouds (Alaskan Skies #1)

After a shattering accident, Kate heads back to the skies and leaves her betrothed behind. Breaking her engagement, she takes her Bellanca named Fearless Kate to the outer reaches of civilization, Alaska. With her dreams of being a bush pilot firmly attached she takes a position at the local general store while waiting to be hired as a pilot. Along her journey she meets a myriad of interesting characters all of whom play a pivotal part in her journey towards rebuilding her confidence.
Ms. Leon is an extremely knowledgeable writer and writes as if she has flown the skies of Alaska as a bush pilot herself. That being said, I had a very hard time identifying or following the plot of this story. At first, I thought the plot was to have Kate and another character fall in love, but that plot ignited and fizzled a few times throughout the book. I also had a hard time distinguishing when time had passed. A chapter would end and the next thing I know we are talking about a few months later or the next summer. There also seemed to be a lot of tangents running throughout the book. For example, one of the characters gets into a wolf fight and ends up killing a few wolves. However, you don't hear from the wolves again.
This book is interesting if you enjoy the topics of flying or Alaska. If either of those interest you, then this book will give you many facts in a more novel based form. I felt like this novel was better thought of as a fictional memoir of a woman bush pilot in Alaska. That is what it brought to mind while I read it.
