really liked it

This book is full of powerful stories, little slices of life told in the voices of black teenage boys in "the hood." They all have an incredibly realistic feel to them, which is what makes them so memorable. My absolute favorite is "Fat Man Walking," but I liked almost all of them, which is rare for me with a collection.

I didn't care for most of the poems, with one huge exception: the first poem, which gives the book its name, could be a wake-up call to any teacher or other adult who works with kids--check out a video version on the author's Goodreads page.
