Frequently charming, but ultimately unsatisfying. This came highly recommended by someone who knows my love for Joan Didion (who blurbs it mightily!), but it wasn't quite my cup of tea-- too much aphorism, too epigrammatic (as Susan Sontag describes it on the back-- she didn't mean it in a bad way, though), too deliberately poetic and mysterious. As well, Hardwick has a dependency on participle clauses and passive voice that grated deeply on me. However, it's a major point in her favour that in spite all of that, she definitely had me enthralled with bigs parts of the book.
