SUMMER READING CLUB: "A memoir of a sixth son of Chinese peasants who is selected to train at Madame Mao's Beijing Ballet Academy beginning at age eleven and ending with his defection to the U.S. at nineteen.
Each stage of Li's life is described in enough detail that one can get a good picture of it even if we can never truly understand what it was like. The book has some choppy parts but it is worthwhile reading."
