The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War
by David Halberstam
by David Halberstam
Having just lived in Korea, and also because my Grandfather fought there, this book brought to life many aspects of the difficult fighting during the war in an interesting and engaging way. I would have loved a little less detail as to some of the individuals lives (for example, in the middle of a description of an important battle, Halberstam will take 3 pages to explain where a soldier came from and how he got to Korea, etc., etc.). In any case, it explains well the domestic political context of the War, and the forces aligning against President Truman on the home-front, in addition to providing an accurate foreign context on the peninsula and elsewhere in Asia....
On the whole, a good book...at times the writing is a little dry but not so bad as to scrap it altogether...
Enjoy!!!
