I've long been fascinated with parallels between the late Roman Republic and contemporary America. This is a great refresher on the history. I've just started it, and it's a really engaging read.

The parallels between Rome's "pirate crisis" and America's "terrorism crisis" in ending civil liberties are frighteningly instructive.

Have you read "The Decline of West"?. Splenger theory is outdated, but his circular vision of the cultures resonate and illuminates our own time.
