Jack's review of A Bell for Adano
A Bell for Adano by John Hersey
A Bell for Adano is a surprisingly pleasant little book that paints a positive message about America’s occupation of a small town in Italy during the Second World War. This is in a stark contrast to another book I read recently, Slaughterhouse about the Allied forces fire bombing of a German town. A Bell for Adano’s main character is an Italian American Major in the U.S. Army who is the acting mayor of the occupied town in Italy. He does everything in his power to bring happiness to the people of the town. I found the author’s description of the democratic principles that the major introduces to the Italian’s who had previously been under fascist control to be uplifting.
