In a story filled with unlikeable and obnoxious characters, Hill House was by far the best. Can't really empathize with its wanting Eleanor, but I suppose she was the most vulnerable. At times it seemed like they were all madmen (and women). Locked up in an asylum for the insane, Mrs Dudley would visit every day to provide some structure for their shattered and disorganised minds. Imagining the banging and whispering and laughing in that crooked old house was quite creepy. In particular the cold spot and the grinning heads of the nursery was disturbing, which would have been the most innocent place in a happy home.
