Moore is a great writer, but she should stick to short stories. I felt like A Gate at the Stairs was a bunch of stories that didn't really belong together bound up in a singular narrator. I would have enjoyed the book more as is if it had been divided into distinct stories or sections. Moore simply takes on too many issues (adoption, race, Iraq, terrorism) and tries to cram them into this very small story. The fact that it's a small story isn't bad, it just means the novel doesn't have legs to stand on. The beginning segment, in which the narrator is hired as a nanny for a family about to adopt a child is the best part of the book.
