Insomnia by Stephen King

Not my favorite of King's, but the bones of a great book are all there. I love Ralph, the protagonist even more now that I'm 15 years older than I was when I first read it.

My only criticism here is that interspersed with King's typical brilliant writing are really clunky bits. Tons of back and forth dialogue that goes on in these huge paragraphs, with each character repeating the other character's name. People just don't talk like that, and King is usually much more sharp with his writing.

The story itself was great, loved revisiting Derry and reading the references to so many of his previous stories--mainly, of course, It (Officer Nell, the Barrens, the flood, Niebolt St.) But also the Dark Tower books, Dreamcatchers, and even Pet Semetary which wasn't set in Derry (there's a mention of Gage.)

Even a pretty good King is better than the best of a lot of other authors and this one is well worth a read. Imaginative, shocking, turbulent and very poignant, Insomnia will keep you up at night.
