** spoiler alert ** Gosh DANG I love Levin. He writes what it feels like to be trapped by society as a lady really, uncomfortably well. Rosmary is sweeter and simpler (though still sharp) compared to his protagonist in The Stepford Wives, and that makes her ending so much more amazing and heartfelt.

SPOILER (even if you've seen the film)

Deciding to happily claim her baby, half-Satan nonetheless, Rosemary stands up to the coven and tells them that their name ("Adrian Steven") is unacceptable and gives her son the name she wanted him to have. She's talking to her son with no qualms at the end, trying to get him to smile. I can't explain how perfect and great this was. Rosemary, for all her simplicity in her desires (children, happiness), has an amazing strength of character that defines Levin's protagonists. Not being cowed by her baby's genetics or the bossy coven, she claims what is hers and stakes her space in the world.

At the end, the coven is chanting "HAIL ROSEMARY."
