I started out almost completely positive that I was going to love this book, even more than Daughter of the forest. Oh, how we can be mislead. The first half of the book captivated me, I loved how bold and challenging Liadan was with the band of fianna. However, I found her anti-woman banter with Bran to be repetitive and kind of irritating at times. Although, I will say there were times where I felt Marillier handled slightly repetitive situations gracefully where lesser authors would have made them boring. Half way through the book I kind of lost my steam, probably due to the increase of war talk. Liadan seemed to lose her way. She became the exact opposite of Sorcha, disobeying the Fair Folk and those wiser than her, and making decisions that were promised to bring grief. Because of this I didn't know if I should see her decisions as faulty or if the "wiser" ones, like Conor, would later turn out to be wrong. Around this time it also seemed like the story lost it's main focus, and put way too high of a priority on smaller tasks. It's with this small completed task that the book ends, a cliff hanger sort of ending.
All that negativity aside, I really did like this book and it's still definitely worth the read. It contains all the same enchanting Irish folklore of the first book, and the stress for personal strength and integrity.
