A one-of-a-kind hybrid of science fiction and slave narrative, "Kindred" is intense, unsettling, and poignant. Dana, a young black woman living in California in the 1970's, finds herself transported back to the antebellum South to protect her ancestor's life. Her time travel occurs at infrequent intervals, whenever her ancestor, the white son of a plantation owner, is in danger. With each passing trip, Dana finds herself drawn deeper into the horrors of slavery and must make difficult, ethical choices.

"Kindred" offers an opportunity for readers to reflect on American history in an original way--putting ourselves in the place of our ancestors.
