** spoiler alert ** Book 20/2010

First and foremost, you all need to know I was at top of my ditziness when I got this book. Mostly, because I mistook it for the first (please ignore the fact that the number "2" is clearly written on the spine).

Anyway, this has a couple of implications. One, I've got no previous idea of what we're talking about - and that included the FAN-TAS-TIC universe in which the book takes place. Two, I feel like I'm supposed to care about these characters even though I don't really know much about them besides their names. Add those two, and you have a seriously cruel read for the first 200 pages or so.

After that, oh my, it's hard to put this down.

Character-wise, I find Kylar rather amazing - and reminiscent of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. Logan is my favorite by far, Jarl awesome, Vi isn't quite so bad for an action girl, and even Momma K gets away! For me, this book, this world, these characters, everything is exactly what The Left Hand Of God could have been... if it hadn't failed so badly.

Also, it was probably the first book of the year that actually got me worrying about the people. I wanted Kylar to ditch Elene and go back to his wetboy life with all my might, I wanted Logan to get out of the Hole, I wanted the rent girls to fight, fight, fight! I raged with Vi and let out a frustrated scream when Jarl died, I even laughed with Uly!

There are flaws, of course. Everybody thinks about sex way too much, Kylar's home life is cheesy to say the least, and the endless cast of characters really put me off at times, enough to skip pages, we have one of those Luke-I-am-your-father moments... but I don't really care, now do I? Nope. The book is just THAT good.

The ending was a little... deus ex machina, I guess. But I'm at least glad we didn't get a 'happily ever after'. Of course this is just Book-2-out-of-3, so the happy ending might be still to come... but I'll get to that in due time. ;)

I'm giving it a four. But sure enough, I'll be back with five once I read the whole trilogy. Good job, Mr. Weeks. You had me. :)

So far, the best book of the year.

Ana Leste o 1º?

Rafaela Nope, estive horas à volta da trilogia na FNAC, alinhei-os por ordem para trazer o primeiro, e acabei por me enganar a trazer este. *headdesk* Está a ser decente, de qualquer forma, portanto não me importo. ;)
