I didn't understand people's reviews that said "it's a really good book, but it's a slow read" because usually when a book is good I fly through it. I completely understand it after reading it, however. My best explanation for this, is that even though it's a GOOD book, it's definitely on the depressing side, so it doesn't have that element of "I have to see what's going to happen next." And, it's not hard to figure out the direction the book is going when it's about WWII. I will say though, that I found the 2nd half of the book much harder to put down because I became more wrapped up in the characters.

It took me about 50 pages before I started to like the book. That's the point where I started to look past the poetic, metaphoric writing that I used to dislike so much back when I was a high school student being forced to read and analyze books similar to this one. Only, back then I would have stopped after the prologue.. Which by the way confused me so much that I had to read it twice! I'm glad I continued past that point, because I ended up liking the book a whole lot more than I thought I would in the end (which, for the record, made me cry.. And that doesn't often happen when I read books).
