In 1968 I was a 16 year old girl who wished I could serve in Vietnam. All the patriotic fervor in the world wouldn't have saved me had I gone there. Thanks to Tim O'Brien and Bowker and Rat Riley and the rest, I cry over their lingering pain and not my own. I am most grateful to all of our best and brightest who have spent and still risk their lives so all the clueless 16 year olds, like I was, can live free and unburdened of the sights they see burned onto their precious brains. God be with the American GI.
