Everything Is Illuminated
by Jonathan Safran Foer
by Jonathan Safran Foer
A show off. He even named one of his characters Jonathan Safran Foer.
It is like he sees Haruki Murakami juggling five bowling pins and he says he can do that too, so he juggles five bowling pins with ease. Then he sees Ernest Hemingway juggling ten bowling pins and he says he can do that too so he juggles ten bowling pins and he even smiles while doing it. Then he sees Gabriel Garcia Marquez juggling fifteen bowling pins and he says he can do that too, and he does it. Then somebody says no one has juggled twenty bowling pins before, ever, and he says he can do that too and he shows us how.
Jonathan Safran Foer, the author, not the character, was only 25 when this book was published in 2003 to critical acclaim. I haven't seen the movie, but my copy says it is now a motion picture starring Elijah Wood. I wonder as what? Jonathan Safran Foer, the character, or Alex, the young Ukrainian translator whose mangled English can make you both laugh and cry?
Marvelous find, again, from the 1001 Books list.

Most likely another one hit wonder like Sebastian Faulks (after his Birdsong, nothing worth reading anymore) or Carson McCullers (The Heart is a Lonely Hunter).I gave Doni a book for your soon to be born child. Maybe his/her first. Bagay sa kanya (you'll know why when you see the book), I couldn't resist buying it. Sayang e, pero wala na akong bata.
Hehe, thanks for the very early gift. :)Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird) belongs to this category? She's a special case.
Maybe. Like when an author's name is mentioned and you can think of just one of his/her works (Erica Jong = fear of flying or J. Knowles = A Separate Peace).
One off wonder: Ralph Ellison was considered a one-off wonder for a long time, and I think Joseph Heller of Catch 22 was, too.Emir, congratulations!
Talking about children,I now realize why it's so difficult for me to keep up with the group: I have been solo parenting and breadwinning without let up for 10 years, and my focus now is still the kids and how they will fare in college or turn out as adults. I am reading Hitchhikers, but at the back of my mind I feel guilty because I should be doing something less selfish, like reading a book on teenagers, planning menus, drafting, cleaning up, finalizing my living will, checking on the cases my father entrusted to me to be vigilant about on his deathbed (although my mother's cooperation is essential here bec she always reminds us she is the boss and it's her judgment) I talked to someone who specializes in transitions, Lito, and he says our age is the age for sitting back and reflecting on our life and what we've achieved so far and deciding on the next steps. But it's not just realistic in our case.
But Hitchhiker's is getting more interesting.
