After all these years of reading and buying comics, I finally got around to Watchmen. It does live up to the heaps of praise, though I have to say as a mystery the plot's a little half-baked. I could easily decipher the responsible party, even if I couldn't see the motivations.

And what of the motivations? What of the moral ambiguity presented in the final chapter? It's kind of unsettling, and in a way almost wraps up too easily. It's as if Moore had all these amazing ideas swirling around with no really great way to execute the endgame. It's too bad, really, because for me it mars what otherwise is a remarkable achievement. The storytelling throughout the book juxtaposes so many different characters and methods, and yet never bores and never gets too overstuffed.

Having now read the book, I'm really, really interested to see how the movie's going to pull off this magic trick of narrative interplay. They used to say this book was unfilmable, after all.
